What is SEO and what a small business needs to know about website SEO

SEO (search engine optimization) means building your website so that Google understands what it is about and shows it to people looking for that kind of service. Unlike ads, you don’t pay for clicks — but results come more slowly.
How Google finds a page
Google’s crawler follows links, reads the page and adds it to its index. When someone searches for “nail technician Tartu”, Google picks the pages from its index that best match the search. Content, location, speed, the mobile view and whether other sites link to the page all count.
Five things that matter most for a small business
1. A clear title and description
Every page has a title, which Google shows in search results, and a short description (meta description). The title should say what you do and where: “Garage renovation in Tallinn and Harju County | Company name” says more than “Home”.
2. Content that answers questions
Write your services, prices, area and answers to the questions customers actually ask. Google prefers pages that help people make a decision. Don’t repeat the same keyword in every sentence — write the way you would talk to a customer.
3. Mobile view and speed
A large share of searches happen on phones, and Google evaluates a page mainly by its mobile version. The page must open quickly on a phone and be readable without zooming. More: why the mobile view decides the client.
4. Google Business Profile
For a local service, your Google Business Profile is often as important as the website: it shows your business on the map and in local results. Fill it in completely, add photos, opening hours and your website link, and ask happy customers to leave a review.
5. Consistent contact details and links
Your company name, address and phone should be identical on the website, the business profile and in directories. Links from other trustworthy sites — partners, local directories, trade associations — show Google that the business is real.
What not to do
- don’t buy links or “1000 backlinks for €20” packages — they can hurt your site;
- don’t copy text from other sites;
- don’t create ten nearly identical pages for every town;
- don’t expect results within a week — a new page usually needs weeks to months to settle in search.
How to check whether Google sees your page
Add the site to the free Google Search Console. There you can see whether the page is indexed, which searches find you and whether Google found errors. Quick check: type site:yourdomain.ee into Google search. We covered the first steps for a new site in a new website and Google.
SEO in Odav Koduleht
Every page built with Odav Koduleht passes an automatic check before you see it: it must have a title, a description, business details for Google (schema.org: name, city and phone) and a menu that works on phones. It’s a good start, but no tool does SEO for you all the way: content, your business profile and links are still up to you. See how a page gets built.
