Website vs social media: which brings more clients?

“I'm already on social media — why do I need a website too?” It's one of the most common questions small business owners ask.
It's a fair thought: people are already on social media, posting is free and finding new customers seems easy. But relying on it alone makes you dependent on a platform whose rules you don't set.
Social media is rented space
Imagine building a beautiful shop in rented space in a shopping centre. Everything works — until the landlord suddenly raises the rent, changes the opening hours or puts your competitor right next door.
The same happens on social media. The platform decides how many of your followers see a post, and every algorithm change can cut your reach sharply. Organically, a post often reaches only a small share of your followers.
A website is yours
Your website is the only place where you make the rules:
- Findable on Google: when someone searches for “dentist in Tallinn” and your page has a clear headline and services, they can find you without you paying for a single post.
- You control the message: everyone who opens the page sees exactly what you want to show — services, prices and contacts.
- The contacts stay with you: you can't export your followers from social media. A name and phone number sent through your enquiry form are yours.
The right combination: both
Social media isn't the enemy. It's a great tool — just not the only one. A smart strategy:
- Website as your base: services, prices, enquiry form and Google visibility.
- Social media as a magnet: posts and ads that bring people to your website.
- Your own contact list: every visitor who sends an enquiry is your contact — not the platform's.
What happens without a website?
A potential customer searches Google for “haircut in Tallinn”. They find your competitor — the one with a website. Your social media page is often nowhere near the top of the results.
Start with a website
Social media lives at the mercy of algorithms. Your own website keeps bringing clients when the algorithm changes. With Odav Koduleht you describe your business in a couple of sentences and in about a minute you have a page with an enquiry form — try it free, no card needed.
